KITE was the name given to airplanes in the early days of aviation.
Even now they get that name by some people. It is slang.

Now it is technically considered a kite if it has a string that holds
the surface of the object into the wind which provides the power to keep
it aloft. Many sources define it as being made of paper, sticks, and
string. However, modern kites are rarely made from those things.

A "train kite" or rather a "kite train" is a group of kites fastened
together, one after the other, like a train. It is flown from one
tether point, or control line.

The Chinese caterpillar kite is basically a train kite.
