I'm looking to get some ripstop and other supplies to sew a kite, and
I'm wondering if anyone knows of an online seller which is based in
Canada, because customs duties are rather expensive.

You are going to find it next to impossible to find a Canadian retailer of kite
grade ripstop nylon unfortunately. I searched long and hard a few years ago and
then came across an obscure regulation that classifies RSN as a 'raw material'
and thus it cannot be sold by retailers and only suppled wholesale direct to
manufacturers!

I was very active in the kite building world until a couple of years ago when
ill health forced me off the flying field. I used to buy all my materials in the
USA and have them posted to me (insist on using the US Postal Service for
delivery and *NEVER* UPS or Fedex!) The duties are really not too bad
considering (especially with the current strength of the Canadian dollar)and if
you want the RSN you have to pay the duties unfortunately. I used to buy all my
materials from here...

...and never had a problem.

Good luck with your kite building.

Larry, you ARE still with us! We have missed you at the kitebuilder.com
forum.

I, too, spend very little time on the flying field. Not health, I am
just slowing down, on which I blame age.

However, I am still active in the sewing room, making kites. I like to
give them away, and get my flying kicks from watching youngsters run
around with the kites! LOL Big grins!

Yup still here and recently discussed getting back into doing some flying again
with my former flying buddy. Whether I will be able to or not is a different
matter but I am getting sick and tired of seeing the same four walls and going
stir crazy!

It's been so long since I last had my kites out of the bag I dread to think what
condition they are going to be in (although they were all packed away neatly)
and I have probably forgotten how to assemble some of the more complex ones ;-) .

Our favourite sewing machine has died unfortunately and as I am on a very
limited disability pension I have not been able to afford to buy the replacement
part yet (it's been broken for over two years). We do have a couple of others
(including a Pfaff) but they are not as versatile as the old Viking with the low
gear option for thick/heavy webbing and the fully adjustable stitch options
(just pre-sets on the Pfaff).

I may get back into flying/building again one day ;-) .
