First Kite for Boarding/Kayaking?

I'm looking to pick up my first kite. I plan to start off using it on
the beach, the sandbar and in a kayak. Once I get the hang of it and
get comfortable, I may wish to kiteboard as well. Since I'm not sure
how this is going to work out where I kayak, or how often i'll use it,
I'm looking to keep costs low the first time around. If I truly fall
in love, I'll buy better gear.

Since I'm looking for as much directional control as possible , will I
want a 4 line system?

I live in NH and will be doing most of my use in southeastern NH and
northeastern MA. Winds tend to be rather mild most days. I have a
beginner windsurfer with a rather large sail, and most days the wind
is insuffecient for use. I assume I'll want a larger kite? About
what size?

Is there a device available that will cause the kite to collapse and
fall if let go, as opposed to flying away? I expect this would be
more necessary through the learning curve, in case the kite wants to
pull my Kayak out of the water, or me into the water.

Also, can I buy a larger kite and dump some of the wind when wind
picks up, like using only part of a sail on a boat or windsurfer?

Finally, I see kite setups listed from ~120 to over 1000. What should
I be prepared to spend to start out?

TIA,

Dan

Hi dan a 4 line is best ....u could practice witha 2
line ....learning how to control the kite that is ........buy am
inexpensive FOIL type kite and practice on land .......then when ready
buy a 4 line ( 2 lines that depower you ) LEI style kite that is the
LEADING EDGE INFLATABLE........this way when is crashes in water it is
easy to rig up again especially if you are kayaking.

@ first I would say 2 line 50-100 for a 2 - 4 meter .....then when
ready for water buy an inexpensive LEI 4 line for about 300 used....
