I think the problem is with the records. We don't know who the first
human was that noticed that (say) a sisal thread kept a leaf afloat when
the wind was blowing.

In nature various spiders make kites and so on. All this happened way
before humans began recording things.

If you want to make a history of humans recording the making of kites,
fine. But I think it would be wrong to describe it as a history of
kites in absolute terms.

I know some may argue that nothing happens until it is recorded by a
human but I'm on the other side.
