Discussion:
Rec.kites Coming to an end

Has it finally come to a point where our once beloved kiters
communications outlet "Rec.kites" ceases to exist? At this posting,
there were only 2 other remaining post.

Let's not let Rec.kites die. I know there are lot's of other kite
related forums, yahoo groups, blogs, etc.. out there, but there's really
not much reason why rec.kites couldn't make a come back, and be a place
where all kite flyers world wide could come to one location to talk
about kites. I'd even welcome the lively dysfunctional discussions
between Mr. Nasty, Roger Maddy, or Andrew Beattie just to preserve this
piece of kiting culture! LOL

Most of you that have been around kiting for more than 7-8 years
remember when this was one of the only ways we as kiters had to
communicate with each other on a international level. Perhaps we as
kiters have become somewhat separated from each other, because there are
too many kite related forums to choose from now-a-days?

I miss the days when Rec.kites was the place to hang out and discuss
whatever was on our minds kite related or not! You knew that every kite
flyer in the world that had access to a PC was posting in here or
lurking everyday.

Indeed.

I hang out in a bunch of forums. Kitebuilder, Fractured Axel, AKA,
some relevants parts of flickr, sometimes flexifoil, but none of them
have anything like the reach or freedom that rec.kites had in it's
hayday.

What is the point of working hard to create content, when the entire
board is only in existance at the whim of the administrator/ owner?

What is the point of writing something worth reading when the majority
of kite fliers on the net don't read that forum?

I don't even go into the forum where you need to register even to
*read* it. GWTW, I think?

*sigh*

It used to be that I would write something on rec.kites and *everyone*
would read it. Kenisky and Maddy destroyed that.

The clear sign that rec.kites had died was when the plan to build the
bench for Ray Bethell was announced in here. Imagine that - rec.kites
has become a place so obscure that you can openly share secrets here
without fear that they might be picked up by the flier you are trying
to keep them secret from.

Well, for what it's worth guys, I still, albeit rarely, lurk here...

I miss what rec.kites once was...it's hard to believe that this is probably
my first post here in nearly a decade.

I would love to see an eclectic SPAM free forum modeled in the spirit of
rec.kites put together somewhere on the web. An international place where
you could filter with tags what information you did and did not want,
perhaps even share pictures and video as well.

In many ways rec.kites just got too big for its own good...

Keep looking up,

It's still in all the newsgroup servers and not likely to change as long
as there is still USENET.

As I recall, it started falling apart when Mr. Nasty came back after a
hiatus. Web forums became more available and were able to ban foul
mouths and jerks.

New users have to go and acually look for a (decent) newsreader, but
IE comes with every new computer. Oh well.

A few of us still check out r.k on the off chance of a development.

It happens to all newsgroups, not only to rec.kites

No individual is to blame.

USENET was king when publishing something on the internet and
discussing it was hard.

Now everyone can create a blog in minutes and have discussions in the
comments.

RSS is used to aggregate all the relevant content to one place (http://
google.com/reader)

<SNIP>

The problem is that there is no new blood to replace all the old blood
that has been lost.

People now-a-days do not know about newsgroups, or even how to access
them.

Hello John, Hello everybody,
Just popped in after reading Andy Wardley's reports of your untimely demise.
One or two new threads per month - does that count as alive?

Anyway, I suppose that I count as new blood. I've been flying one liners
(bought and selfmade) for a few years, and started 2 line freestyle last
year.

It's nice to be able to introduce myself in plain ascii, no smilies, etc.

Hi all.

I just subscribed to rec.kites a few weeks ago after purchasing my first
kite since I was a kid. I've been on Usenet for a long time but I mostly
just lurk. The kite I bought was a Sutton Flow Form 16 that I'm using with
a kite aerial photography rig. I'm heading to the beach in a week, so I'm
hoping to get some good shots without detroying my camera.
